| A virus is a member of
a group of disease-producing agents parasitic in plants and animals, unable to multiply
outside the host tissues; invisible by ordinary microscopical methods, so small as to pass
through filters which retain bacteria.
There is much argument as to whether viruses are "living" or not. Viral classification is a developing discipline, with addition as and changes to the taxonomic structure occurring regularly. The list of viral families includes only those with vertebrate hosts and the names and listings will be subject to change, as internationally accepted nomenclature alters. |
