Description |
Elephas maximus
- Asian Elephant:
- Loxanoetus lenae (Acari: Anoetidae) has been described
from waxy exudate and debris of the external auditory meatus of the
right ear of an elderly female Asian circus elephant. (J293.18.w1)
Loxodonta africana
- African Elephant:
- Loxonotus bassoni (Acari: Anoetidae) has been described from
the ear of African elephants. (B384.7.w7,
J62.38.w2,
J293.18.w1)
- Otanoetus wetzeli has been found in the ears of an elephant
in Namibia. (B384.7.w7)
Clinical signs:
- In an elderly female Asian circus elephant, there was much more
debris in the ear with mites than in the other external auditory
meatus in which no mites were found. (J293.18.w1)
- Ear problems in general (of which infection with these mites was
recorded in two cases) were reported to
involve discharge (sometimes purulent) from the ear, oedema, swelling,
pain or discomfort, erythema and haemorrhage. (B450.24.w24)
|
| Further Information |
- In the elderly female Asian elephant circus from which Loxanoetus
lenae were described, the contralateral side of the head had a
bony deformation ("ballooning" around the external auditory
meatus, and it was speculated that this could have been associated
with a past otitis externa, mite induced, of the left ear -
there was no evidence for this. (J293.18.w1)
- In wild Loxodonta africana
- African Elephant, the presence of Loxonotus bassoni was not associated with any lesions. (J62.38.w2)
Diagnosis:
- Detection and identification of mites in ear debris. (J293.18.w1,
B450.24.w24)
