General Description May be associated with weight loss, general signs and death in geese, with haemorrhagic enteritis in geese, and with respiratory disease in ducks.
Further Information Clinical
  • Weight loss, wing droop and deaths in two to three days reported in geese, with a non-01 Vibrio cholerae cultured from the liver of one affected goose (J5.25.w5, B32.14.w21).
  • Non-01 Vibrio cholerae also reported in ducks with air sacculitis or septicaemia, and cultured from the nasal cavities of healthy ducks (B32.14.w21).
  • Also reported from ducklings with conjunctivitis and from gut contents, of ducklings, but without obvious link to pathology  (Vibrio cholerae NAG) (J6.4.w2).
  • Vibrio metchnikovi infection reported in geese and may cause haemorrhagic enteritis (B16.19.w1).

Diagnosis:

  • depends on finding the organism in gram-stained faecal smears, or culturing from faeces or from organs (e.g. liver) at post-mortem examination (J5.25.w5, B16.19.w1).

Treatment:

  • oral tetracyclines 5-7mg/kg, or sulfamethazine in drinking water is suggested (B16.19.w1).

Transmission

  • Vibrio cholerae may survive for some time in the environment (J6.4.w2).

N.B. There is a possible human health risk from ill birds which may have had access to coastal waters or shellfish (J5.25.w5, B32.14.w21).
