General Description
  • A tick-borne rickettsial disease of humans, causing mild to moderately severe febrile disease.(B247)
  • Incubation 3-5 days, fever and an initial lesion (small buttonlike ulcer, 2-5 mm diameter with a black centre), enlargement of the regional or satellite lymph nodes and after about four days of fever an erythematous maculopapular rash appearing on the forearms and spreading to cover most of the body including the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Fever may last for more than a weak. Death is rare but more common in aged/debilitated individuals. Fulminant vasculitis can occur.(B247)
  • The rickettsiae are maintained by a cycle between Ixodid ticks (Ixodidae - Hard ticks (Family)) and wild animals. (B247)
  • In some areas maintained in domiciliary environments, with Riphicephalus sanguineus - brown dog tick as the main vector. (B247)
