Notes Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) was created in In 2001, by the merging of MAFF (see: Website Ref - W32 - Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) with the DETR (see: Website Ref - W5 - Wildlife and Countryside Directorate, Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR)) The information on the previous government departments remains available as there are data references made to the previous ministries.

Defra's core purpose is to improve the current and future quality of life. 

For the first time one department has brought together the interests of farmers and the countryside; the environment and the rural economy; the food we eat, the air we breathe and the water we drink. 

We do all this by integrating environmental, social and economic objectives - putting sustainable development into practice every day, and by championing sustainable development as the way forward for Government.

Defra's strategic priorities

Defra’s aim is sustainable development - defined as:

‘development which enables all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life without compromising the quality of life of future generations.’

Defra promotes sustainable development as the way forward for Government.

Under the overarching aim of sustainable development, Defra has five strategic priorities:

  • Climate change and energy
  • Sustainable consumption and production 
  • Protecting the countryside and natural resource protection
  • Sustainable rural communities
  • A sustainable farming and food sector including animal health and welfare

A significant part of Defra’s work is concerned with preparedness for emergencies and contingencies, which fall within the remit of environment, food and rural affairs.
