Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs

On 16 June 1997 the former Departments of Environment and Transport were merged to become the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR). The main aim of this was to achieve a more integrated approach to policy on these issues.

Wildlife and Countryside Directorate (WACD) was the DETR Directorate responsible for policy on Wildlife & Countryside. It was based partly at Eland House, Victoria, London and partly at Tollgate House, Bristol. It was part of the Housing, Construction, Countryside and Regeneration Group within the Department.

The Directorate objective was to enhance opportunity in rural areas, improve enjoyment of the countryside and conserve and manage wildlife resources.
