FMD: List of susceptible species commonly kept in zoos

Artiodactyla (cloven-hoofed mammals)

  • Family Suidae - e.g. domestic pigs
  • Family Tayassuidae - e.g. collared peccary
  • Family Camelidae - e.g. Arabian camel, alpaca
  • Suborder Ruminatia - ruminants
  • Family Cervidae - e.g. reindeer, fallow deer
  • Family Giraffidae - e.g. giraffe
  • Family Bovidae – e.g. gaur, yak, cattle, domestic goats and domestic sheep

Perissodactyla

  • Family Tapiridae - Tapir americanus

Proboscidea (elephants)

  • African and Asian elephant

Rodentia (rodents)

  • Family Bathyergidae (African mole-rats)- e.g. Tac hyoryctes splendens
  • Family Hystricidae (Old World porcupines) - e.g. Hystrix galeata

Insectivora (insectivores)

  • Subfamily Erinaceinae - e.g. European hedgehog

Carnivora

  • Family Ursidae - e.g. grizzly and Asiatic black bear
